Introducing colour into your home certainly has its advantages, but it can be quite daunting too, particularly when the trends are leaning so heavily towards bold, daring hues. The trick to incorporating your favourite colours from Pantone’s report into your kitchen or bathroom is to think of them as just one part of the whole. Consider firstly the size of the space you are decorating and how much natural light it enjoys; remember that darker colours can make a kitchen or bathroom appear a lot smaller than it actually is, while larger, open-plan spaces can more easily accommodate them. If you do favour deeper colours think about combining these with fixtures and fittings in lighter shades, to provide balance. A ceramic or quartz kitchen work surface, for example, chosen in a crisp shade of white, will give a striking visual contrast to darker cabinetry beneath or dark painted wall in the background, while introducing metallics in the form of brassware and even small appliances will give the space an industrial-feel that is very much on point.
Ask yourself also, or get advice from your designer, which materials, finishes and other colours can be combined with your catwalk favourites to achieve just the right result? A marble-effect quartz kitchen worktop or bathroom countertop will provide a soft feel if you are opting for a bold yellow or oranges, for example, while a grey worksurface is a versatile choice that will blend seamlessly with virtually any colour, from light to dark and will guard the latest catwalk colours against dating and becoming fashion rejects all too quickly.
